Introduction

Smart Energy and Smart Environment refer to the use of technology and data to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Dresden is committed to innovative climate protection measures and aims to achieve climate neutrality well before 2050. Supported by the EU programme ‘100 climate-neutral cities by 2030’ and the updated Integrated Energy and Climate Protection Concept (IEK), the city is actively working on sustainable solutions for the energy transition.

The aim

The aim is to transform Dresden into a climate-neutral city. As a model city, Dresden aims to play a pioneering role in Europe through innovative projects, technologies and infrastructure, and to inspire other cities on their path to climate neutrality.

Clean energy for our city

We are committed to ensuring that Dresden develops sustainable and smart energy systems. For the local population, this means lower emissions, more renewable energy and a clean future. Dresden is involved in several EU projects, making it a model city – or even a ‘laboratory for the whole of Europe’.

SmartLiving, smartSolutions

The Dresden Future House demonstrates how this can work. With sustainable energy solutions such as tenant-generated electricity schemes and flexible electricity tariffs, everyday life becomes more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. A central building control centre monitors energy consumption and ensures the optimised use of resources.

Early warning systems for severe weather

Dresden As a city on the River Elbe, it is particularly vulnerable to the risk of flooding. Furthermore, climate change is leading to increasingly severe storms. Using sensor technology and simulations, it is possible to calculate relevant forecasts and issue timely warnings to the public and the emergency services.

A sustainable energy supply

A sustainable energy supply is being established through the use of photovoltaics, wind energy and modern energy storage systems. At the Dresden Friedrichstadt Municipal Hospital, a Smartenergy model is being trialled, which is intended to lead, in the long term, to a climate-friendly, secure and cost-effective energy supply for the hospital.

Innovative energy solutions

Dresden Through projects such as NEUTRALPATH and MAtchUP, it offers the opportunity to work on forward-looking energy solutions. These include, amongst other things, the use of photovoltaics, geothermal energy and innovative construction technologies such as carbon concrete and timber construction.

New business areas

The DymoBat project is investigating how smart energy management systems can integrate the batteries of electric fleet vehicles into the electricity grid. This opens up forward-looking business opportunities for companies in the energy and mobility sectors.

Creating a climate-neutral city

By collaborating on flagship projects such as the ‘Positive Clean Energy Districts’, businesses can play a key role in transforming cities towards climate neutrality.

Joint solutions

Extreme weather events pose major challenges for local authorities. To ensure they are prepared, researchers, local authorities and the business community are joining forces to develop appropriate solutions.
