Online survey: Help design the digital traffic information boards at Dresden
What information really helps road users? This is the question being addressed by the Smart–City– sub-project ‘Environmentally Sensitive Traffic Management’ is currently investigating this question through an online survey. Until the end of September 2026, members of the public can evaluate various designs for digital traffic information boards and thus help shape the future design of the displays.
Among other things, the survey examines which information on digital traffic information boards is perceived as particularly helpful and how it influences travel behaviour. The aim is to gain insights into how to design the displays in the most comprehensible and effective way possible.
The results will be directly incorporated into the further development of digital traffic information within the Dresden city area. From October 2026, existing systems will be modernised in stages and new digital traffic information boards installed. These are intended to inform road users at an early stage about the current traffic situation, highlight alternative routes and thus contribute to a more even flow of traffic. At the same time, this will help relieve congestion in busy urban areas and reduce emissions.
Johannstadt as a pilot area
The concept will initially be trialled in Johannstadt. There, the new possibilities offered by digital traffic information will be tested as part of the pilot project Smart City and further developed in collaboration with local residents.
In addition to the online survey, an in-depth workshop is planned for November 2026, during which participants will explore the design options for the digital displays in greater detail. Those interested can register their interest at the end of the survey.
On-site support
Anyone wishing to take part in the survey but lacking the necessary technical facilities, or wishing to address queries or provide feedback directly to the Roads and Civil Engineering Office, will have the opportunity to do so in person on selected dates. Staff will be on hand with tablets to assist with the survey on several dates in Johannstadt:

Digital solutions for sustainable mobility
The survey forms part of the Smart City project ‘Environmentally Sensitive Traffic Management’, which is being implemented by the Roads and Civil Engineering Office in collaboration with the Environment Office and the State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology. The aim of the project is to develop and test digital and data-driven solutions for sustainable, environmentally friendly and climate-friendly mobility.
The focus is on developing an urban air quality index. By linking environmental and traffic data, transport measures can be assessed and optimised in a more targeted manner in future. Public participation is being organised in collaboration with the Knowledge Architecture department at the Technical University of Dresden.
