First measuring point set up in railroad underpass

As part of the "Digital urban heavy rain twin and environmental monitoring" measure, a new measuring system for detecting flooding during heavy rainfall on public roads is currently being tested. It is based on the use of thermal imaging cameras in railroad underpasses, whose image data is evaluated automatically and almost in real time on water surfaces using AI. The aim is to make flooded areas directly visible in the urban digital twin.

In December 2025, the first thermal imaging camera was installed in the railroad underpass at the corner of Freiberger Straße and Ammonstraße. A further three locations in the Dresden city area are already planned. The evaluation system is currently still in test mode, as the AI is being continuously developed.
