Dresden design: Visionary. Networked. Future-oriented.

Goals and vision

Innovative,
digital and
liveable

The City of Dresden is developing and testing cross-sector digital strategies for living and working in a city of the future as part of its Smart-City measures. Digitalization will continue to change many areas of administration, the economy and urban society. In a Smart City "smart city", municipal infrastructures such as energy, buildings, transport, water and wastewater are interconnected with the help of information and communication technologies.

At Smart City Dresden, the opportunities offered by information and networking technologies are used in the interests of sustainable, integrated urban development geared towards the common good. The resulting smartapplications and concepts make a decisive contribution to strengthening Dresden as a liveable, resource-creating and sustainable city and to creating a higher quality of life.

Dresden's knowledge and business landscape is an essential component in supporting our cities in overcoming the challenges of climate change, energy and mobility transition in the future. This makes Dresden an extremely innovative and high-performing business location that continues to produce young companies with pioneering products and services. The technical excellence available at Dresden can make a greater contribution to substantially increasing the quality of life and opportunities for participation and co-determination for everyone.

An excellent ecosystem for innovation

Dresden unites culture, science and high technology in a unique combination. Model solutions for a digital, public welfare-oriented city of the future are being developed here.

Smart City in action

The department Smart City of the state capital Dresden in the Office for Economic Development supports partners from science, business and civil society in the development of the latest technologies for sustainable urban development.

Model project Smart Cities

Since 2022, Dresden has been participating in the "Smart Cities" pilot project together with the Technical University Dresden. Funded by the German government, the project is developing pioneering approaches for networked and sustainable cities.

Research strength and funding

Thanks to the close integration of research and practice, Dresden projects benefit from excellent expertise and EU funding, which enables the implementation of innovative ideas and technologies.

Team and participants

Together for a smarte
future

Dresden as a city of culture, science and high technology, offers an excellent ecosystem for creating pioneering and exemplary solutions for the (digital) city of the future that is oriented towards the common good. Both the city administration of the state capital Dresden and stakeholders from science, business and civil society are already pursuing a variety of Smart-City approaches in a wide range of contexts.

In the Office for Economic Development of the state capital Dresden, the department Smart City is working with many partners to develop and test the latest technologies for future-oriented urban development in order to meet current and future challenges such as demographic change, climate protection, energy transition and environmentally friendly mobility. Innovative ideas grow into successful projects and products of tomorrow at Dresden. Excellent research and development are closely interwoven - and benefit from the excellent factors of the dynamic state capital. Various EU subsidies have made the economic development projects possible in recent years and will continue to do so in the future.

In addition, the state capital Dresden has been participating in the " Smart Cities" model project with the TUD Dresden University of Technology since January 1, 2022. Since 2019, the German government has been funding a total of 73 model projects Smart Cities, which were selected in three phases. The Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building acts as the funding body under the guiding theme "Together out of the crisis: Space for the future". The state capital Dresden, in partnership with the co-initiator Dresden University of Technology, was selected by the federal government as part of the Smart Cities model project to exploit the opportunities offered by information and networking technologies in the interests of sustainable and integrated urban development. The city's own IT services company Dresden is managing the project and is working closely with the TUD as the main scientific partner.

Strategy

Paths to the
digital city of tomorrow

The Smart-City strategy Dresden was developed by the IT services department of the state capital Dresden together with the WISSENSARCHITEKTUR Laboratory of Knowledge Architecture (TU Dresden), with the participation of experts from various specialist departments and relevant stakeholder groups from civil society, business and science.

It was drawn up during the strategy phase of the pilot project Smart City Dresden . It formulates goals, fields of action and action plans. Until the end of the project in December 2026, the strategy will be expanded and updated annually to reflect new findings and progress.
