Transparency through open data: Dresden lands in third place

A Berlin-based company has compared the 20 largest German cities

The state capital Dresden continues to drive forward the transparency and digital accessibility of administrative data with the Dresden Open Data Portal. A recent report by the trade journal Kommune21 shows that Dresden is one of the pioneers in the field of open data in Germany.

The Berlin-based consultancy Finatycs examined which of the 20 largest German cities make the most open data available to their citizens. The frontrunner is Hamburg with 8,239 data records, followed by Berlin (3,171) and Dresden (1,117). Environmental, climate, infrastructure and traffic data are the most common topics.

Open data creates transparency, enables participation, forms the basis for data-based decisions and promotes innovation and economic growth. For companies and developers, open data is a valuable resource for developing new business models and non-profit software products.

The Dresden Open Data Portal was launched in 2019 on the basis of a city council resolution with the aim of digitalizing administration and increasing transparency. It provides neutral, open data sets of the state capital Dresden in machine-readable and standardized formats free of charge. The database covers 14 categories - from population, traffic and elections to infrastructure and the environment. It is also currently the focus of the open data measure of the model project Smart City Dresden , which aims, among other things, to increase the value creation potential of open data.
