On Monday, September 16, 2024, the digital association Bitkom presented its sixth ranking of the smartest major German cities. Dresden improved by one place compared to 2023 and moved up to fifth place in the overall ranking with 81.3 points. We were able to increase our scores in the areas of administration, IT and communication, energy and environment and mobility.
Cities in Saxony, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria better than the average
Dresden the city of Leipzig continues to defend its position as the leading digital city in the eastern German states. Leipzig is in 23rd place, Berlin in 28th place. The ranking also shows that, as in the two previous years, cities in the federal states of Baden-Württemberg (74.1 points, 2023: 68.1 points), Bavaria (72.2 points, 2023: 66.5 points) and Saxony (71.8 points, 2023: 67.3 points) performed particularly well.
As an MPSC municipality and university city to Smart City
Dresden benefits from the fact that large cities with a population of 300,000 or more and the federally funded model projects Smart Cities (MPSC) score above average. The model project Smart City Dresden is currently working on 10 measures, which also have a positive influence on the Smart-City ranking. The (EU) projects that are being processed in the Office for Economic Development in the department Smart City also have a decisive influence on the good performance. According to Bitkom, state capitals and university cities are also above average. These are all advantages that also apply to Dresden and have ensured that it has consistently been at the top of the rankings in recent years.
Five subject areas, 13,000 data points and 82 major cities
13.284 data points were used as the basis for the Smart-City ranking, which is 567 more than in the previous year. Not all German municipalities are included in the evaluation, but only those that exceed a population limit of 100,000 people. This year, for the first time, there were 82 large cities, as Hanau has achieved the status of a large city. The five subject areas examined - administration, IT and communication, energy and environment, mobility and society and education - are broken down into a total of 37 indicators, which in turn consist of 162 parameters.
