Development of a multimodal traffic management system for the area of environmental sensitivity


Starting in October 2026, individual traffic information signs in the Dresden metropolitan area will be gradually replaced or newly installed. These signs are intended to provide information on traffic congestion, parking options, and eco-friendly route selection.
As part of the Smart City Dresden pilot project, the state capital of Dresden is conducting an online survey on traffic information signs. The survey presents several different designs for traffic signs. The goal is to gather insights to help design new traffic signs that are as helpful as possible.
The Traffic Management project aims to manage traffic in Dresden in an environmentally friendly manner in order to improve the quality of life in the city. Since many residential areas are located in the city center and it is not possible to reroute traffic, a comprehensive approach is being developed that combines traffic and environmental data. This will result in a modern traffic management system that creates innovative solutions through cross-sector collaboration.
The aim of traffic management is to specifically reduce traffic congestion and environmental pollution in Dresden by developing an urban air quality index that is used for efficient traffic control. This system enables sustainable management of traffic flow and, through targeted measures, improves air quality and the urban environment in heavily polluted neighborhoods.


Dresden ’s new traffic management system aims to efficiently manage the flow of traffic in the city and minimise journey times. Environmentally friendly, data-driven traffic management not only improves mobility but also reduces environmental impact, ultimately contributing to better air quality and a better quality of life.

The project combines transport and environmental data to promote mobility and quality of life in Dresden in a sustainable manner. By introducing an air quality index and implementing targeted traffic management in areas with high pollution levels, harmful emissions can be specifically reduced and air quality improved in the long term.

The new traffic management system also focuses on improving road safety for the public. Particular attention is paid to vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, who are to be better protected through innovative technologies.

Interactive platforms and public participation ensure that the people of Dresden are kept informed about traffic and environmental impacts and can actively contribute their experiences and suggestions.
